v  Unless cost is controlled, project objectives can be jeopardized
v  Cost, time and quality are interlinked.  Cost control is most critical
v  Most poorly managed projects have cost overrun

3W AND 1H IN COST CONTROL
  v  Who controls cost?
  v  When to control cost?
  v  Where to control cost?
  v  How to control cost?

          COST COLLECTION
              v Labour
        v Material
        v    Cost codes

          CALCULATION VARIANCES
                 ü  Schedule Variances (SV)
·         SV = BCWP – BCWS
·         Positive SV means work is ahead of schedule

ü  Cost Variances (CV)
·         CV = BCWP – ACWP
·         Negative CV means overspending

          PERFORMANCE INDICES
   ü  Cost performance index (CPI)

Task 3 :Project Planning tools

Types of Project Planning tool

  •  Project scheduling
  •  Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
  •  Network Planning
  •  Gantt Charts

Project Scheduling
  • Develop an optimum project scheduling in term of cost, time and quality
  • Project time is the sum of total activities in the critical path.
  • Project and activities have constrain
  1.  Dates fixed by contract
  2. Cash flow
  3. Resource limitations
  4. External approval

Gantt chart
1.1 Gantt Cartt -
  • Gantt chart is a matrix of row and columns. The time scale is indicated along the x axis. Activities are arranged on the y axis.
  • Gantt are usually used to represent the project schedule. Gantt charts should be updated periodically.

1.2 Gantt chart

Work Breakdown Schedule
  • Breaking down project tasks to smaller work packages
  • Smaller packages facilitate planning, costing and management.
  • Reduces risk
  • Increases chances of success

1.3 WBS

Network Diagram
  • Time and milestone is identified for each activity
  • Symbols used are arrows and nodes indicating activities and milestone
  • Network diagram facilitates project management and control
  • contains networks of activities or tasks aranged in a sequence or parrallel.
                                                         Critical Path Method
